Eleven!

This is a little late, but better late than never!

My daughter A celebrated her 11th birthday three Sundays ago. Yes, ELEVEN! Can you believe it? Wasn't it just yesterday that I wrote her this letter for her 8th Birthday? That was the year that tested our faith, and hey, I must say, we came out strong!

Too embarrassed to be center of attention. Photo courtesy of my little brother.

A will be in the 6th grade this school year. How did that happen?!

Gone are the days when I can carry her with one hand while doing household chores. Nope, she's almost as tall as I am, and now wears a shoe size 9! Crazy.

To A,

Because it is #FlashbackFriday (actually publishing this on a Friday but initially wrote this post for #ThrowbackThursday), here is a throwback photo blog of my favorite photos of you - taken through the years - eleven years! Happy birthday, Beautiful! Momma loves you very much.

A's first Christmas, with her Little Tikes Coupe from Ama P!
Another photo, similar to this one, made it to the second issue of Smart Parenting.

Her first Enchanted Kingdom visit. It rained that day, and we got FREE tickets to go back. Hehe.
You can't sit on the Wizard na now. We tried to duplicate this shot with RL. But the guards were quick to stop us.

With our super poodle, July. A still misses him. R gave him away when we moved out of the condo.

A feeding our cockatiel, Chippy.

This photo of A at Davao's Crocodile Farm made it to Smart Parenting!

A's very first trip to Disneyland!

First school presentation. Wearing Achi KY's Casa Graduation outfit.

Flower girl at my friend A's wedding.

A - the Littlest Pet Shop addict

A is a great big sister to RL!

All she wanted that Christmas? Her two front teeth!

This is one of my favorite photos of the kids! RL loves to photobomb, even as a baby. Hehe!

A, with her favorite teacher and second mom, Teacher M (from her old school).

Because we used to live in a condo with a pool, A learned how to swim on her own.
She is even better than me, and I took formal swimming lessons for three whole summers!

Isn't this a beautiful photo? Hehe, lucky shot at HK Disneyland.

Happy Birthday!

#ThrowbackThursday: FBorFW!

I'm not sure if I posted this here before. Maybe on Multiply or the old Xanga one. But anyway, I was cleaning out my computer when I found this.

Can you find A on the Patterson's fridge? This was posted on The Fridge on the For Better or For Worse site. I know I always post about Baby Blues, but before that, this was my ultimate fave comic. Still a fave actually. I grew up with Lizard-breath, er.. Elizabeth and Michael and the rest of the Pattersons. So to have A on The Fridge was a biggie to me. Yay! She also got featured twice (or maybe more) on April's blog. I have yet to find the screen caps for those. Anyway...

My little lady is no longer a baby!

Can you find A?
Yes, for better or for worse - that's the name of the strip. Can you guess why it's a fave? Haha!

Then and Now.

When we were kids, my brothers and I did all sorts - stuff I don't see kids ever doing now. I don't think I'm THAT overprotective with my kids, but when I think about how my childhood was, I can't help but wish the same for them.

Do you feel the same way? I mean, I remember playing in the rain, climbing trees, playing tag with my neighbors, etc. Most kids I know (including mine!) stay at home most of the time, glued to the TV, playing with their toys and gadgets, or whatnot... (too sheltered is the word I may be looking for here).

Do you remember the stuff you used to do as a kid? Do you see your kids doing the same today? I've been reminiscing a lot about my childhood lately and noticed that my kids don't really enjoy the same activities I used to enjoy as a kid.

I don't think my kids will ever get to...

...CLIMB A TREE. Well, we used to live in a condominium in the business district. No trees there. And we don't have trees where we live now. They aren't the kind you can climb or hang from. BUT when I was a kid, we used to play out in my granny's garden, play hide and seek, climb trees, wade in ponds... you get the picture.

...WALK ON TOP OF MONKEY BARS. Ok, so maybe I'm to blame for this one. I always call them down when I see them climbing anything in the playground. BUT when my cousins and I were kids, we used to pretend we were in the circus. We'd spend hours on end playing on the swing set at our granny's house. I remember my cousins and I would even compete to see who can stay upside down, hanging from the monkey bars, the longest. And we'd go across the bars, over 8 feet above the ground, without fear or hesitation. Yes, I was crazy like that. Hehe.

...PLAY IN THE RAIN. Who hasn't? Well, not my kids. A has visions of dirty canal and estero water getting dried up during the water cycle and coming down again as rain. No soap in the clouds to clean that out, right? So they don't. I've never gotten sick after walking in the rain. I don't care about getting drenched. But my kids? Don't count on it. BUT when I was a kid, my cousins and I would play in the rain. We'd wade in flood waters around the compound. Once, my brothers and I even took out the "Slip N' Slide" and had a swell time playing while it poured. Fun times!

...SLIDE DOWN THE STAIRS WITH A MATTRESS. Ok, so maybe only a handful did this as a kid. Our staircase here at home is kinda narrow, and I don't think it'll be safe for my kids to slide down with the crib mattress. BUT My cousins and I used to take an old mattress and slide down our granny's long staircase. Once, during the summer, when my cousins, brother and I were at my godmother's house, we slid down their stairs backwards, holding on to my cousin R's old mattress. We tumbled down and R ended up in the ER. Hehe. Oops.

...CLIMB UP TO THE ROOF TO PICK FRUITS FROM TREE BRANCHES. There are no flat roofs to climb here. Nor are there big fruit-bearing trees around our house. BUT when we lived in the old compound, we'd climb up the emergency ladder, up to the terrace roof and pick Indian Mangoes from the tree in our granny's garden. When we moved to New Manila, our house had two huge Star Apple trees. You could climb up to the roof and pick one, sit under the canopy, and reflect on life. LOL!

There are other things I can think of, but I don't think I'd want my kids to try 'em now. Ha! Like say, catching tadpoles (I was around 9, and I was with the Pastor's son - we used to go to the old Calvary Chapel at Amoranto and caught the tadpoles from a dike, eeew, I know) and wading in flood waters (while catching fish from our neighbor's overflowing fishpond). Or dipping my feet in my dad's old pond and realizing there was a toad in it, about an hour too late! Haha! This list could go on.

All this reminiscing is making me miss my childhood. My brother and younger cousin, T, would take our bikes every afternoon (we called ourselves the Bikecrossers!) and just ride around the compound. We pretended we were secret agents and our black Cocker Spaniel, Beulah, was our chief. Haha!

The good ol' days. How I wish I could let my kids see how carefree life was back in the day when I had nothing to worry about. It's just so different now. Or maybe that's because we choose to make it so.

What did you do as a child that you wish your kids can do today?

Weeds

Beijing has tons of these. I am not sure if these are dandelions but what the fudge, the place is literally littered with these pods floating in the air. It gives you a winter-y feel as they do look like snow (yep, that much!) floating down.

My little boy and A loved the fact that they could wake up to more of these each morning. They called them "wishing weeds". Caught RL attempting to blow one off on our 3rd day in Beijing...

Too cute!

Not a Baby!

My little girl turned 9 today. It is bittersweet. I was talking to her teacher the other day and exclaimed how it all went by so fast. Sometimes I feel like I missed out on most of her toddler years.

It's hard when life hands you circumstances and you have little, if no choice. I've always dreamt of being a housewife. Sadly, it is close to impossible in my case. When A was a baby, R didn't have a job. When he had one, it paid so little, I had no choice but to keep my day job. Today, the case is more like I'm gonna need a supportive hubby first before I go on dreaming to be a housewife. Aya!

I brought home a cake from the baker's last night for A's midnight countdown. It was a choice between Barney and Mario, as these were the only ones available. A loves Mario Kart so I got her Mario.

The little one was most excited about his Ate's birthday cake. He loves the Orange Chiffon cakes at Shoppersville. Truly a classic! Brings back memories of college and the good ol' days.

A absolutely loved her cake! I love how my little lady loves the simple things in life. You give her a pen and she's thrilled. So it took me a lot of convincing to make her go on a "date" with Grandma today. "She's gonna take you on a shopping spree!" I had said excitedly.

A looks down, sad, and says, "But I promised the people in the office I'll bring them cake and ice cream. And Chooks-to-Go!" (she made little invitation cards, inviting everyone to a "party", although I made sure the folks at the office knew we'd set that for another day)

So I told her it would be okay, and that I had told them about her date with my mom. After much reassurance, she looks to me and says, "Please make sure they know because I don't want them to be disappointed. I want to give them a party because they love me and they're family to me."

I looked back and smiled. My daughter is no longer a baby. She's all grown up.
