Happy Birthday to Me! (A Post-Birthday Giveaway)

It was my birthday last Friday, and to celebrate, I wanted my friends to send in something different, aside from the usual birthday greet. So on Facebook, I asked them to send me a fan sign photo. Or any creative photo made especially for me. To get them going, I offered them a prize (I realize now that I only have a handful of willing friends, LOL).

Out of 33 photo greets, the kids and I were supposed to choose just our top 3. But there were actually 5 photos that stood out, showing my friends' efforts to make me happy (haha, babaw lang ng kaligayahan ko).

McDonald's Kiddie Crew Giveaway!

When my siblings and I were kids, our mom made it a point to fill up our summer vacations. I'm telling you, our days were packed! We went from music lessons (piano, guitar, voice, drums, etc) to art classes, swimming lessons, basketball clinic and yes, even Reading Dynamics! I remember just being dragged out of the house everyday to reading comprehension classes in Greenhills. Yes, those were the days.

There was a time, however, when we'd spend the early part of summer in Baguio for youth camp. I always dreaded the bus ride up the mountain - I always got sick. But everything would be okay once we reached the summer capital! Summers in Baguio were always fun! We'd pick seeds from wilting flowers (to plant back home) and gather pine needles, pretend it was hay, and make a bed just like the one Heide's grandpapa did in the cartoon. We'd ask for food from the commissary, even when rules were no snacks in between. We'd sneak out of camp to go to Maharlika to shop. Yes, those were indeed memorable summers.

When I finally had kids of my own, I found myself wanting to do the same! LOL! There must be better things to do than slothing off the summer.

Last month, RL had the chance to join McDonald's Kiddie Crew! We were among the first ones to register at the new franchised McDonald's Don Antonio store. While at first, RL needed a bit of prodding and convincing, he actually loved the experience, especially since he got to try everything first-hand at his favorite fast food joint!

When the five-day program was over, he actually asked me if he could join again. Our nanny is currently on vacation, and I am actually considering another stint at McDonald's before the month ends. McDonald's Kiddie Crew, now on it's 22nd year, runs until the last week of May. Last day of registration has been extended until May 25, so you actually still have time to get your kids to try out being part of McDonald's.

Passion 2014!

Passion Manila 2014 is happening this week, and this is mainly why I haven't had time for the blog (and other things). Yes, the worldwide student movement of the Passion Conferences (led by Pastor Louie Giglio) will once again be on Philippine soil, and it is two days away!!!

If you were there during Passion Manila 2008 and 2010, you should know how incredible an impact they had on thousands of students - lives were forever transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit on those days. After 3 long years, they are back! I can't wait for Thursday and Friday!

If you're going, don't forget to bring a clean, new towel to donate to Operation Blessing! They are collecting these for the benefit of High School students in the Visayas affected by Typhoon Yolanda.

To Die with a T.

My younger brother is getting married this year. June, to be exact. I have about 2+ months to lose weight (I don't want to look like the mother of the bride no, LOL). So I've been starving myself lately, literally cutting down on food.

I tried going on the Cabbage Soup Diet last month. Alas, I actually gained because I gorged on cabbage soup all seven days. Kasalanan ko ba na I love cabbage soup? LOL! So ayun, I ended up gaining two pounds instead of losing any! Aray!

You must be wondering how I managed to eat all that soup, and why I didn't get tired having bowls and bowls of it everyday. The secret? TABASCO SAUCE!

Man, a few drops of Tabasco Red Pepper Sauce gave it the extra punch, and it was indeed delicious soup! I really, really didn't mind having it every single day.

A week after that diet, I switched to all veggies. I love salad. I love greens, carrots and tomatoes. I don't mind having it plain (no meat), kahit na minsan, feeling kambing na ako. Hahaha! Baaaa!!!

My cabbage, lettuce, arugula, carrots, tomatoes and sunflower seed salad. Nom!

And I'd add a few drops of Tabasco Sauce to the apple cider vinaigrette. Sarap! Life-saver talaga! In fairness, I lost those two pounds plus some.

Ok, I know this is late, but I had tons to do last week, plus I had a bento party order early this week. Pasensya na, sorry po. Haha, here's last week's scheduled giveaway...

FACT: I always bring along a bottle of Tabasco Sauce in the car. We bring it with us to McDonald's, KFC and other restaurants. Once, we ate at this posh steak house (name of establishment withheld) and I cannot believe they didn't have Tabasco! Instead, they brought a bottle of some local brand of hot sauce that didn't quite taste like anything hot and peppery. I cannot (and will refuse to) use any other hot sauce brand. Only the best - Tabasco.

It Never Ends!

Today, I came home to two bickering siblings. One was complaining that his sister was making faces at him (and he was whining to no end), and the other? Well, she was making sure to irk her brother, waiting to see if she could make him cry. And so the little one starts picking on his sister - kicking her, poking her, touching her things, etc. And then the sister cries (pikon din pala). It becomes a crazy cycle! Kulang nalang talaga mag-wresting sila! Kaloka!

I've written about this before. It can be very frustrating when you get involved. Today, I decided to be Spectator Momma. I let them be, and watched them 'til they got tired. Eventually, A went up to sleep. And I finally got some peace. RL's disposition immediately changed - you'd think someone switched on his happy light (if there is such a thing).

I've been told that they will outgrow this phase. And I tell you, I cannot wait 'til that day comes.

Don't get me wrong. I don't want them to grow up just yet. I just pray that the kids learn to get along. The little boy loves and adores his older sister, but A sure loves to pick on her little brother. Did I ever do that to my younger siblings? I asked my brothers and they remember how I used to exert superiority (being the older sister) when we were playing with our Lego sets. "You used to get all the nice pieces to build your village. You had mansions, tapos yung sa amin, squatter!"

Okay, okay, I get it. I was a bully, too.

Two weeks ago, I started a new reading plan on my Bible app - Parenting By Design. I have made it my mission to make sure I pray for my children everyday. There are things out of my control, but it comforts me to know that I can pray for my kids, and that God is very much in control of any situation they find themselves in.

I love the reading plan because it is a good supplement to my 365 Days Bible in One Year reading plan. Plus, the daily devotions aren't long. I can spend more time praying after. If you want to try it out, you can download the Bible app by YouVersion and search their reading plans for it.

Sick!

So the little boy has been sick a lot lately. His throat lining must be so thin, it gets scratched easily. Just when I thought we were finally off the nebulizer, the nanny tells me I need to get more Ventolin because he has started coughing again. All he had were mangoes. And he was fine that day. I'm thinking, allergies? I hope not. He loves mangoes!

We haven't been back to see the kids' pediatrician in months. I know, I know, I'm a bad mom. I am blessed to have a doctor/surgeon for a neighbor though, (Hi, Rin and Doc!) and he's my go-to person when it comes to small medical issues. Thank you, Lord, for Doc A!

Hmmm... why do some doctors charge an arm and a leg for services anyway? Just last month, with the Measles outbreak scare, I had called another pediatrician's office (reco'd by a friend) to ask if the kids can go get their shots. I was quoted a whopping amount for it! I need to give up a month's worth of groceries just to get my kids' boosters updated! And to think the neighborhood health centers are giving those shots out for free. I need to seriously invest in Health Insurance. Argh! It's so hard when you're the sole provider. You have to give up one thing to have another.

My mom says health is a great investment, and I shouldn't even think twice when spending for it. You only live once, right? My emergency fund has been put to good use last year. I just hope none of the kids get anything serious this year.
